The professional association for design. Baltimore Chapter

About

There was a point in history when in order to sell cantaloupes, all one had to do is slap a nice picture of cantaloupes on the outside of the can. As the tour of the Baltimore Museum of Industry would tell you, this was done, in part, because the kids who would go to the store for their mothers could barely read and they needed to know what was inside the can. Design has played a role in society for a very long time even in the midst of its constant change.

You, perhaps, don't need us to tell you things are changing. Fifteen years ago, few designers were designing text and e-mail messages for their clients. So, whether it's a roll-call of the various media on which a message displays or the increasing role of design in our lives, design plays a more critical role than ever in translating meaning to its constituents. It lights a path for how we as consumers choose this over that, this candidate over that one. Along with (and sometimes in stark contrast to) globalization and "flat-world" economics, today's messages present the desire (sic)—the requirement—for what designers do to be more personally relevant in conveying specific messages.

AIGA Baltimore plays a part in lighting that path for the message of design relevance and furthering the cause of design education. Despite the disparate nature of the various avenues of the modern design profession, we look to provide professional enrichment to about the profession and educate both designers and clients about the role that design plays in shaping the messages of tomorrow's advertisements, campaigns, websites and brochures. Our activities reflect a diversity of specialties (gender, race, interests and age) that represent the profession in a way that is unique to Baltimore.
