Growing up with a severe speech impediment misdiagnosed as autism, Drew found solace through drawing. Visual arts has always been and will continue to be his outlet for communication. Drew is the lead graphic designer for the Farm Credit Council in Washington, D.C. With his experience working with non-profits, and minority-owned organizations, Drew focuses on developing creative solutions for marginalized communities. He received his BFA in Art + Design at Towson University. When Drew doesn’t immerse himself in the latest graphic design trends, he may be found in the kitchen, creating new recipes, and experimenting with different flavors!
What’s your biggest challenge as a designer or creative?
There always seems to be new software/tools that roll out rapidly that I feel, as a designer, compelled to learn to keep up with the latest technologies.
What’s your favorite quote/philosophy?
“Try and fail, but never fail to try!”
What are your top 3 favorite books or movies? (doesn’t have to be design-related)
I’m not much of a movie-goer, but I like TV Shows!
- Avatar the Last Airbender (I could any episode without getting bored)
- Spirited Away
- Toy Story (since I grew up watching this movie, it’s my soft spot)
What’s on your desk that you could not live without?
I feel lost without my sketchbook and my pen/pencil.
What sparks creativity for you?
Examining other designers’ well-crafted, thoroughly executed designs (campaigns, digital/print collateral, etc.). I enjoy analyzing other people’s work to see what I like and dislike about it and seeing if I can include some of their ideas in my projects (in my unique way, of course!). These works are not limited to well-known designers like Paula Scher or Jessica Hische; instead, I look at publications like the Communication Arts, GDUSA, and the Society of Illustrators.
What are some of your hobbies?
Cooking, drawing, going to new restaurants, and visiting museums.
