Meet the Board | April Thiess, Communications Chair

Hi, I’m April (she/her)! I’m currently the social media manager at TBC. Over the past 10 years, I’ve managed social media for various brands, primarily in the agency space. I thrive on creativity and staying ahead of trends. From the rise of TikTok to the evolution of Instagram, I genuinely enjoy every aspect of social media. Connecting with people and building personal relationships is my passion. Outside of work, I co-founded a Facebook group called “Women in Marketing.” Alongside other co-founders and admins, I help maintain it as a safe, reliable, and authentic space for conversation. Our group now boasts over 90,000 vetted members!

What’s your biggest challenge as a designer or creative?

I’ve always worked in digital fields and never have had the natural skills to paint or draw, so turning my ideas into reality can be tough. I’m very detail-oriented, and sometimes it’s hard to meet my own expectations.

What’s your favorite quote/philosophy?

The more you love what you do, the more you can do for others.

What’s your biggest lesson you’ve learned from being a designer?

Everything is worth exploring, there are no bad ideas, just keep creating.

What are your top 3 favorite books or movies? (doesn’t have to be design-related)

The Craft
Get Out
The Life Aquatic
(I clearly love Bill Mury lol)

What’s a ‘dream project’ you’ve always wanted to work on?

My partner works in music, and I’ve always dreamed of working with a label to create graphics or social media plans. I have a deep appreciation for musicians and their craft.

What sparks creativity for you?

I’m passionate about fitness and make it a point to attend spin and yoga classes regularly. I find these workouts incredibly inspiring and they set a positive tone for my day. I also enjoy ending my evenings with a cocktail in my backyard, where I often experience some of my most creative moments.

What are some of your hobbies?

Movies: I am always down for a movie.
Cooking: I’m vegan (with the occasional cheese treat) and enjoy cooking.
Fitness: I stay active.
City Living: I LOVE exploring Baltimore’s local restaurants, shops, bars, and events.
