Ink & Pixels, AIGA Baltimore’s Student Design Conference, is one of the area’s largest events focused on helping students prepare for a career in design.
In the morning, the in-house design team at T. Rowe Price will discuss the skills needed to succeed in the professional world, and Deloitte Digital designer and strategist, Rica Rosario, will talk about the things that are essential for all creatives to master but are unlikely to learn in the classroom. Then enjoy a talk from the Space Telescope Science Institute’s Zolt Levay, who will present the work behind NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope images. After lunch, students will present their portfolios to regional design professionals and receive constructive, one-on-one evaluations.
AIGA Baltimore is excited to host this annual event that brings together students and professionals who share a passion for design and its future. Join us and share your excitement on social media using the hashtag #inknpix17.

The Speakers
Julie Zerivitz, IRPS | Enterprise Marketing Services, T. Rowe Price
Julie will speak to her growth in her career as she worked her way from Designer in a small studio to Art Director and Manager in a large, in-house agency. Along the way she will touch on challenges and the importance of collaboration, will provide humorous anecdotes, and will aim to uplift and empower the audience.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Julie managed to escape to Massachusetts for 4 years in order to pursue a degree in Anthropology and Studio Art. After graduation, she furthered her design education at The Maryland Institute College of Art and (forever a student at heart) still remains involved at MICA, as adjunct faculty. Julie has worked for small design firms, for herself, and for the last 10 years an Art Director at a global financial firm. She also consults on branding for local businesses (mainly her husband’s brewery) and is a Mother of 2 little girls and a 12 year-old, white Labradoodle, Bodhi.
Rica Rosario, Designer, Deloitte Digital, President, AIGA DC
Networking. Budgets. Client relations. Your role as a designer. Getting your boss to like you. Playing nicely with your non-designer teammates. They don’t teach these things in school because they’re messy, and most folks don’t talk about them because they’re personal.
DC-based designer and strategist, Rica Rosario, will talk about the things that are essential for all creatives to master but are unlikely to learn in the classroom. When you’re out of school, how do you scale the steep learning curve? It isn’t easy, but this should help. She’ll also speak about her journey from winery to design consultancy, and her current role at Deloitte Digital where she works at the intersection of design, technology, and business to solve wicked problems.
Rica Rosario is a human-centered designer, creative strategist and social do-gooder delivering impactful business solutions through data-driven design, storytelling and disruptive innovation. She has 11 years of experience in design, user research, behavior change, branding and digital strategy. Her industry experience ranges from hospitality and wine and spirits to international development, global health and education. Rica currently serves a Senior Product Manager at Deloitte Digital, as well as the president of AIGA DC. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA). Like any true Californian (by way of the Philippines), Rica is a big fan of tacos, beaches, big dogs, wine and snowboarding.
Zolt Levay, Science Visuals Developer, Space Telescope Science Institute
The Hubble Space Telescope, NASA’s flagship space science mission has become familiar to many non-scientists around the world via the media and popular culture, and influenced everyone's understanding of astronomy. One of the many reasons for this is a steady stream of dramatic, colorful images that show us wonders of the cosmos in more detail than ever before and help to communicate Hubble's groundbreaking science results. A blend of objective image processing techniques and more subjective, artistic and photographic principles help to translate Hubble’s exquisite science data into engaging views of cosmic landscapes, as well as explanatory graphics and entertaining visualizations.
Born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, of Hungarian parents, Zolt came to the U.S. at the age of four, and grew up near Baltimore, Maryland. Zolt became interested in astronomy in high school, being particularly fascinated by the magnificent photographs made with the world's great telescopes. Trying to make photos with his own home-built telescope helped Zolt fuel an interest in all things technical and a growing passion for photography. Zolt is Principal Science Visuals Developer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. He has been the lead of Hubble Heritage, an STScI project to showcase the visually finest images from Hubble, balancing science with aesthetics. Zolt has been fortunate to produce some of the most remarkable Hubble images, including the Hubble Deep Fields, Hubble Frontier Fields, Orion Nebula, Andromeda Galaxy, and many others
