We are thrilled to share with you the first-of-its-kind AIGA chapter-led and co-created national awareness week: EMERGE. Designers locally and across the country will be actively participate in this initiative. More information on how you can participate below.

EMERGE is a series of experiences tailored to help the emerging designer hone their skills, discover their talents, and grow their career. We’re kicking off this new EMERGE Initiative with a week’s worth of events and content.

EMERGE programming will continue on throughout the year ahead and supported nationally by all 70 AIGA local chapters. Your participation will ensure its continued success. EMERGE is the result of AIGA Minnesota’s awarded AIGA Innovate grant.


ABOUT THE EVENT:

You’re a designer just starting out in the game of life, if only there really was a path for you to follow! You have tons of questions about employment, growth, leadership, entrepreneurship and life skills. We are bringing together a panel of experts who are ready and waiting to answer your questions, share their experiences and help you figure out your path. Whether you want to hone your skills, discover your talents, or figure out how to grow your career; this is the event for you! Come get YOUR questions answered and take your design career and your life to the next level.

Once you register for this event, share your questions and talk with your peers using the hashtags #AIGAemerge and #AIGAblueridge. The best questions will be compiled and curated the best questions and put to our expert panel on Saturday, August 20, at 10 am – noon. Afterwards, lunch will be served and you will have time to network with your peers and talk to the speakers.

  • Seasoned designers seeking to interact with and advocate for emerging designers

  • First 50 attendees will receive a digital copy of Underconsideration’s Flaunt, a resource for design students as well as young, experienced, freelance, and independent designers.
  • All in-person attendees will receive 3-months free access to Front Row, General Assembly’s e-learning platform.
  • All in-person attendees will receive goodie bags, provided by Sappi, with Print Works magazine, Sustainability Report, Building a House Sheet, Ideas that Matter, and a stock book.

THEATER INFO:
The only theatre of its kind in Baltimore, The Charles Theatre, has the unique distinction of offering first-run specialty films in addition to Hollywood movies, foreign films and cinema classics. The 1150-seat, 23,000 square-foot movie house is located in one of Charles Street’s most intriguing historic buildings.

Parking is available across the street in the lot and garage. It is $2 for 3 hours, and street parking may also be available.

This event is FREE and open to the public.

The Judge’s Bench is in the heart of historic Old Ellicott City. Free parking is available on streets as well as nearby Lots E and F (Judge’s Bench is located near the corner of Main and Hill Streets). Arrive early to get the happy hour specials.

LEAP II: Value of Design Symposium

A new generation of designers is emerging committed to applying their creative talents to address the wicked social and environmental challenges of our time. But what are the professional pathways for designers pursuing careers in design for social innovation? In April 2016, the Center for Social Design at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) will host LEAP/2: Value of Design Symposium to further evolve strategies for advancing professional pathways in design for social innovation.

Forum: Designing Civil Rights
MICA’s graphic design community will gather for a forum on civil rights. De Andrea Nichols, designer, activist, and social entrepreneur from Ferguson, Missouri, will talk about her work using design as a tool for social change. Ellen Lupton and Brockett Horne will discuss the historic role of graphic design in the fight for equal rights, social justice, and visibility among people united by race, gender, sexuality, and ability. A student panel will present creative projects that engage identity and social change on campus and in our community.

Production Club of Baltimore presents Holiday Duckpin Bowling Party

AIGA Baltimore supports our community by sharing events from local organizations that we believe will interest our members.

Designers meet duckpin for a vintage take on the Production Club of Baltimore‘s annual holiday bowling party. This year the event will be held at Patterson Bowling Center on Thursday, December 3, from 6-9pm. The party will have its own floor, shoe rental is included, and PCB will provide the food and holiday spirits to celebrate the holiday season. Come ready to bowl, network and have a flat-out good time!

Part of the proceeds will go to help the Maryland Food Bank this holiday season.

Baltimore Academy of Illustration Presents Jacob Thomas

AIGA Baltimore supports our community by sharing events from local organizations that we believe will interest our members.

Baltimore Academy of Illustration is proud to present illustrator Jacob Thomas for its third visiting illustrator lecture at The Windup Space. Aspiring illustrators/designers and pros alike are encouraged to come and learn about Taylor’s experiences in the illustration industry on Tuesday, December 8 from 6-8pm.

Jacob’s work has graced the pages of publications such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, and The New Yorker, and has been recognized by Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, and Communication Arts, among others. In addition to being an accomplished illustrator, Jacob is a fine artist and sometime street artist; his work has been featured in various exhibitions from coast to coast.

The lecture will begin shortly after 6pm followed by a Q & A. Jacob will be showing work from his extensive career. Join us for another excellent night of illustration!

The Baltimore Academy of Illustration (BAI) is an unaccredited, private institution with one goal in mind: to teach artists who want to be illustrators how to become illustrators. Unlike traditional art schools, BAI focuses specifically on illustration. BAI offers students of all economic levels the opportunity to receive high-quality, college-level instruction. We welcome adult continuing education students, high school students who want to sample college-level illustration courses, and traditional college-age students. BAI instructors are working illustrators and experienced educators with a variety of complementary experiences and teaching philosophies. A main tenet of BAI instruction is preparation for professional illustration work by offering challenging assignments and critiques, along with practical knowledge to forge a career in illustration.

Baltimore Academy of Illustration is proud to present illustrator, fine artist, and educator Taylor Callery for its second visiting illustrator lecture at The Windup Space. Aspiring illustrators/designers and pros alike are encouraged to come and learn about Taylor’s experiences in the illustration industry on Tuesday, November 10 from 6-8pm.

Taylor Callery is an American digital and traditional artist whose conceptually bold and graphic work has been featured in the pages of Harper’s Magazine, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Smithsonian, The Atlantic, Money Magazine, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and many more.

Never relegating himself to a single format, his work is not only seen in numerous national and international publications, but also advertising campaigns and gallery exhibitions.

Taylor has also been recognized by prominent entities such as American Illustration, The New York Society of Illustrators, 3×3 Magazine, Communication Arts, The Los Angeles Society of Illustrators, and the Society for News Design, among others.

MICA: Warren Berger – A More Beautiful Question

MICA’s Center for Social Design will host Warren Berger, renowned author and speaker on design thinking and innovation for a FREE public lecture and book signing on September 10th from 7 to 9 pm in MICA’s Falvey Hall. AIGA Baltimore is a proud supporting partner of this event.

Warren is the creator of the website, A More Beautiful Question, and author of the 2014 book, A More Beautiful Question: The Power of Inquiry to Spark Breakthrough Ideas.

An expert on design thinking and innovation, Warren has studied hundreds of the world’s leading innovators, designers, red-hot start-ups, and creative thinkers to analyze how they ask game-changing questions, solve problems, and create new possibilities. Warren’s previous book was the international bestseller Glimmer (aka CAD Monkeys, Dinosaur Babies and T-Shaped People) which Business Week named one of the “Best Innovation & Design Books of the Year.”

Warren currently writes for Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, and was a longtime contributor at Wired magazine and The New York Times.

Code & Coffee is an opportunity for you to practice your skills, meet new friends, get to know teachers, and get help if you need it. Bring your laptop, your recent projects, and your programming problems!  Or just come to get to know us and ask any questions you may have about Girl Develop It!

All are welcome regardless of gender or skill level, whether or not you’ve attended past Girl Develop It events.

Code & Coffee events are relaxed and informal, and are intended as a way for our community to work and play together while providing each other with ongoing support and feedback. Feel free to come for the full time or drop in whenever you can — there’s no agenda. We can’t wait to see you!
